Silk’n Technology

The Basics

Silk'n home-use hair removal devices are proven to be safe and effective for men and women alike. Dermatologist recommended, the innovative IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology used in every Silk'n epilator is lauded for its easy, effective and safe application.

IPL therapy works by using specially patented flash lamps that emit pulses at different frequencies from across the full light spectrum. The light pulse is attracted to pigment in the skin and hair follicle and uses this to inhibit and eventually permanently stop regrowth.

Because IPL technology works by using pigment in the hair, those with light colored hair may not benefit from IPL therapy as much as patients with darker hair. Additionally, IPL therapy does not work on vellus hair or fine hair of any color.

IPL technology can be found in professional devices used in clinics as well as in the newer home-use products. HPL (Home Pulsed Light) uses IPL at a lower intensity so that it can be self-administered in the comfort of your own home.

For those receiving IPL therapy in clinics, lasting results can be expected after 3-6 months of treatment, with one session a month. Patients using HPL do-it-yourself devices can be treated once every two weeks and can also expect to see results within 3-6 months.

Beyond the Basics

It's no surprise that Silk'n hair removal devices enjoy wide popularity across the dermatological community and among men and women alike. Easy to use and pain free, Silk'n HPL (Home Pulsed Light) devices are safe and effective for permanent full-body hair removal, including sensitive and private areas. Additionally, Silk'n devices are the only devices on the market that have received both FDA and CE approval for the removal of facial hair below the cheekbone.

Although some patients claim to experience slight discomfort from treatment, the stinging and pinching sensation disappears immediately after each treatment ends. Patients can administer therapy themselves in the comfort of their homes with Silk'n's revolutionary HPL technology, which uses the same mechanism as traditional IPL at a lower intensity. Now, for the first time ever, you can glide the IPL applicator along your skin in one smooth, quick motion and experience permanent hair removal for a fraction of the price!

Because HPL devices use a slightly weaker pulse, treatment can be administered once every 2 weeks, instead of once a month. Permanent results can still be seen over a 3-6 month period. It is also important to remember that hair in different areas grows in separate cycles across the body, which is why multiple treatment sessions are required. However, IPL treatment tends to synchronize the growth cycles of body hair.

IPL technology uses wavelengths of filtered optical light to focus on the melanin in each strand of hair to inhibit growth. The darker the hair, the more effective the treatment will be. When the melanin in the skin and hair absorbs the pulse at a temperature of 65°C or higher, the effect spreads throughout the skin cells over the area being treated, effectively limiting their growth.

It is important to understand that IPL treatment works differently for everyone and its effectiveness is dependent upon each patient's hair type and skin color. The texture of the hair, the patient's sex and skin color, along with the size of the area treated all influence the effectiveness of IPL hair removal.

Since IPL therapy works by targeting pigment in hair and skin, dark hair on light skin is the easiest to treat while light hair is harder to treat. IPL treatment is often not effective for those with dark skin and/or light or white hair.
